Nov 12: Cleaning The Temple

Ahaz gathered together the furnishings from the temple of God and cut them in pieces. He shut the doors of the Lord’s temple and set up altars at every street corner in Jerusalem. In every town in Judah he built high places to burn sacrifices to other gods and aroused the anger of the Lord, the God of his ancestors. (2 Chr 28: 24,25 NIV)

Ahaz desecrated the Temple and when he had died the legacy of his reign was physical and spiritual neglect. When Hezekiah took the throne the first thing he did was clean the mess left to him and restore and purify the nation of Israel.

Often when we realise the mess we have made in our lives we turn and look at it and are overwhelmed by the legacy of spiritual neglect. In this weeks sermon we seek to find the courage and hope that is we look to God and keep our eyes on Him and are willing to let Him lead us then we can see our temple cleaned and our heart restored.

But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; 16 for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.”

1 Peter 1:15,16 NIV

The same voice that commanded creation says “Be Holy”. Is that a requirement or a declaration? Should we be trying to meet a standard or accepting a truth?

Oct 8: Conformed To His Image

And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory,

are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory,

which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit. (2 Cor 3:18 NIV)

Who are you? How does God see you? Did you know that you are a work of art being made into an image of God by the Holy Spirit? However, a part of that work is that things that aren’t part of that goal need to be removed. This week Ian shares that we are to allow God to do His work as He makes us into reflections of Himself.

Oct 1: Why Do You Do What You Do?

Now Adonijah, whose mother was Haggith, put himself forward and said, “I will be king.” So he got chariots and horses ready, with fifty men to run ahead of him. (His father had never rebuked him by asking, “Why do you behave as you do?” He was also very handsome and was born next after Absalom.)1 Kings 1:5-6 NIV

Have you found in your life actions that you wish weren’t there but you have had as long as you remember? Often this comes from behaviours that have never been challenged and beliefs that were never questioned. God’s Spirit leads us to righteousness and His Word brings Godly discipline. In other words, He asks us “Why do you do what you do?”

The Christian walk is one of intimacy. His Word brings us to Jesus and from encountering Him He expects transformation. So if you are ready for the challenge, let God take you through the look at not just what you do, but why.

Aug 20: The God who leads you

This is what the Lord says—
your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel:
“I am the Lord your God,
who teaches you what is best for you,
who directs you in the way you should go. (Isaiah 48:17 NIV)

How often do we wait on God and when we hear what He wants, we jump ahead without Him. We do this because we believe Christianity is about doing what God wants when it’s really about walking with Him. Listen as this week Ian Allen shares on our need to be “Followers of Jesus” not workers. We are to go where He’s going, nothing else.
